The University of California Santa Cruz has established and is leading a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) at NASA Ames. In September 2003, the University of California (UC) was awarded a ten-year research contract by NASA Ames. The UARC is currently operating in its 2nd extension year. Research under this contract focuses on information technology, biotechnology, computer science, aerospace operations, astrobiology and synthetic biology. The UARC conducts long-term focused research tasks in NASA’s growing multidisciplinary research mission needs.
As part of the UARC, a Systems Teaching Institute (STI), directed by San Jose State University Foundation, has been formed. The STI enables students from UC, San Jose State University, and Foothill-De Anza Junior College District to work alongside University and Ames researchers; enhancing their educational experience while training them to become 21st Century world class scientist, engineers, and educators.
The UARC is an establishment of collaborations with organizations that are the best in their fields delivering excellent-driven research and training the scientists of tomorrow.
