MANAGING DIRECTOR

The UARC Managing Director (Director) provides the vision and strategic direction to ensure the overall success of the UARC’s research mission and long term growth.   The director operates in direct interface with senior NASA counterparts and UC administrative and academic leaders to provide a collaborative research environment to the benefit of the NASA mission.  The Director assures that the planning and development of research task teams and research task plans are fully integrated with overall UCSC and NASA Ames operations.  The incumbent leads the UARC’s management team.

The incumbent will have responsibility in three primary areas:

UARC Leadership and Strategic Planning

Set objectives and milestones for UARC research units.  Serve as the key liaison with NASA contract officials and research task requestors on issues related to the mission driven research projects.  Develop innovative means of expanding opportunities for UC in mission areas aligned with NASA Ames.  Serve as UARC executive point of contact with the principals of subcontractor organizations to establish business relationships.

Research Task Order (RTO) Oversight

Provide overall management oversight of the RTO operations: ensure RTO performance review for implementation, deliverables, use of resources and budget, staffing, reporting and progress.

Management and Supervision

Supervisory responsibility for:  Science Director, Director of Business Operations, Technical Area Directors that oversee functional areas (e.g., Air Traffic Management, Nanotechnology, Earth Sciences etc.), Principal Scientists directly involved in Cooperative Agreements, and Aligned Research Program direction.  Support the recruitment and retention of scientific and technical professionals across a wide range of academic disciplines

Qualifications

Extensive related experience managing, developing and implementing research for a performance based task order driven contract at a NASA research center or equivalent environment.  Experience must include general management of activities of comparable scope.  Advanced technical degree and professional experience in at least one field relevant to the research program of the UARC.   Demonstrated leadership experience addressing and successfully resolving diverse problems, understanding the importance of structure, organization, resource management and completing critical tasks in a timely manner.

Air Traffic Management Software Engineers/Associate Scientist

Are you interested in joining an internationally recognized team conducting cutting-edge research on automating portions of the nation’s air transportation system to conceptualize technologies for the air traffic control system targeted at the year 2025?

The University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) at NASA Ames, seeks experienced Software Engineers at all levels to prepare for the next-generation air transportation system, which will serve the Nation's growing air travel demands through high levels of automation, including completely automated air/ground control of commercial air traffic. 

Incumbents will develop software and algorithms for automation of air traffic management operations with an emphasis on the surface, extended terminal area, traffic flow management, and/or the interaction between these domains. The principal focus of the research is ongoing software development contributing to aircraft performance modeling, route modeling, and trajectory prediction.  The automation algorithms depend upon accurate real-time, four-dimensional predictions of an aircraft's future flight path.

Incumbents will be hired at the appropriate level based on their education, experience and skills:

Entry level Requirements: BS in CS or related engineering field, Demonstrated ability to program in C/C++ and JAVA, Experience in distributed system, software source control, bugs reporting, database, internet technologies, and hardware platforms, Knowledge or ability to learn commercial MATLAB statistical analysis and plotting.

Highest level Requirements: PhD in Aero, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, CS, Math, or Physics, Expertise in JAVA, C, and object oriented programming in C++, Substantial directly related experience with Unix/Linux and Windows OS, Understanding of complex distributed software system in multi-platform environment.

Preferred Qualifications:  knowledge of aircraft performance modeling or air traffic management; experience with ClearCase and Eclipse.
